Gitmo's paper trail

It's asking a lot to believe that Gitmo is this screwed up:

President Obama's plans to expeditiously determine the fates of about 245 terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and quickly close the military prison there were set back last week when incoming legal and national security officials -- barred until the inauguration from examining classified material on the detainees -- discovered that there were no comprehensive case files on many of them.
[snip]
In a court filing this month, Darrel Vandeveld, a former military prosecutor at Guantanamo who asked to be relieved of his duties, said evidence was "strewn throughout the prosecution offices in desk drawers, bookcases packed with vaguely-labeled plastic containers, or even simply piled on the tops of desks."
He said he once accidentally found "crucial physical evidence" that "had been tossed in a locker located at Guantanamo and promptly forgotten."
[emphasis mine]

I mean, c'mon. I get that compartmentalized control of souce intel makes a single file a ticking time bomb, but we did plan to prosecute these guys, right?

Somebody was going to put together a case - so presumably the information would have to have come together at some point. Right?

This "I told you closing Gitmo would be hard" BS that's slithering into the media is this icing on the cake. We screwed this up so bad, it's practically impossible to fix it. You should have listened to us...

I hope the administration doesn't flinch and just gets a bigger shovel. To do otherwise just rewards incompetence...or worse.

my favorite pushback was the NY Times article the very next day after the Gitmo announcement regarding the Saudi guy. I am often reminded of the scene from "The Godfather" regarding having "people" at the newspaper. While a discussion/article was clearly a legitimate thing, the story printed was in large part not.

Amen to the bigger shovel thing. It will take that at every turn to repair this country.

I saw that article. Seems like Agnotology alive and well.

CJR has a bunch of TARP related agnotology - as big business types try to get out in front of a wave of disapproval.

The fact that Gitmo was so screwed up is even more proof that it was a mistake.

Even more reason to fix the damn thing.

That the enormity of the screwup is being used as a defense tactic is just beyond stupid.

Aren't we supposed to FIX what is wrong?

Rrrrgh!
