CJR' Michael Meyer makes a great observation:
WaPo, Newsweek’s Stumper blog, Politico, and several others use headlines today rechristening former favorite Hillary Clinton as the new “underdog” of the race. Allow us to offer a clarification of terms. The underdog is the individual or team expected to lose going into a particular contest. Once the contest is actually taking place, the underdog can pull a surprise upset or perform as expected, but, even if he wins, he remains the underdog. Conversely, UCONN’s players do not become the underdogs because they are down fifteen points at half-time. They’re still the favorites, they’re just losing. The media pendulum will now swing in her favor.
Where once her every move was seen as desperate and out of touch - now the press will fawn over her. Now she's "Scrappy" and "serious."
It must be a miracle, after all what else could explain how the press got this one wrong?
Well, start with the polls that obviously missed the mark:
-and add to that a mad rush to believe that what surprises the media must be unstoppable.Off the cuff, I'd guess that New Hampshire voters are belligerent enough to see something sold as inevitable and say "Nah, I'm voting for the other one."
Those branded as anti-establishment took Iowa. New Hampshire voted for the establishment brands.
We'll see where it goes from here.
Oh, and Mitt loses again... how sad for him. Ha!
