Who in the heck likes corn?

Yes Iowa is happening. No – I really don't feel like saying much about it.

Legions of better informed observers are beating this topic to death. Of course it matters. It broke Dean and made Kerry (and therefore ensured another four years of the Bush administration), but I can't help but gripe about how stupid the whole thing is.

First off – when it comes to picking a good candidate, the horserace is just the least relevant thing possible. The manufacturing of momentum is what passes for debate, and we get wall to wall coverage of this mis-step or that "attack."

Huckabee is running an ad! OoOOoooo
Huckabee's not running his ad! AaaAaAAaaah
Huckabee's running his ad at a press conference announcing he's not running his ad.

-Media, are you frickin' kidding me?

How's about Iraq? Grilling candidates about the schism between GOP candidates who want to stay the course and those who want to bail out? Any story there??

No??

Add to that the Byzantine rules of the Iowa Caucus make this an exercise in gamesmanship rather than a representation of the will of the populace.

Oh, and Iowa – Iowa, gets to speak for the nation? – anoint she/he-who-should-be-funded?

When the hell did that seem like a good idea?

Stupid freaking system.
