The future of search engines

What if you crossed Google and iPod's coverflow?

You'd get Searchme.com

Pretty slick - preview your retrieved pages before you click through.

Maybe not this implementation, but "See it before you click it" is going to be a killer app for search engines.

There's also cuil.com - which is a less flashy search results page - but still superior to lines of text.

If pages can be coded to feature relevant images (as opposed to marketing noise) you can have the makings of one hell of a search tool.

Gooogle.... Time to buy another company  (or two).

The thing that's neat about Cuil is that it splits things into categories for you. If you search on something like "mercury" you get tabs across the top. One says "all results" the next says "Freddy Mercury" the next says "Mercury Cougar" etc. There's also a menu on the right, "explore by category" that provides broader categories that include the things in the tabs at the top. Anyway, just try a search for "mercury" on Cuil and you'll see what I mean.

It provides context, instead of just giving you a blob of information that you have to parse for yourself to find the type of mercury you were looking for.

Ok, looking at my results, I only saw one listing for mercury the metal, so it looks like Cuil maybe skews toward the commercial in its results. But still, a great idea for organizing the results list, I think.

On aesthetics, Searchme is prettier, but on function Cuil is totally the winner for me.

The screenshots on Searchme are frequently illegible. You do get a textual summary (at the bottom of the image) but it could be very hard to determine what a page is without going there - something that the preview is supposed to prevent.

Cuil is trying to beef up the results with visuals - but if they can make the category function work - they've got something even better than pretty pictures.
