The AP story is making the rounds, but it'd be nice to find out what kind of good they have on this guy. After all, the last time the FBI was "interested" in a guy - they got it wrong to the tune of $4.6 million dollars.
Even if the FBI is merely piling blame on an innocent corpse - (something I don't believe, but have no evidence either way for) - this isn't the big issue.
Glenn Greenwald's all over the bigger issue:
If the Anthrax can truly be traced to a US lab - who the hell was telling ABC News that there was an Iraq angle? ABC told us their sources had identified bentonite in the samples and that suggested an Iraqi connection.
Whoever fed ABC News the false "bentonite" stories weren't "sources" in any meaningful sense; they used ABC to disseminate to the public highly significant, and very consequential, lies. What possible justification is there for ABC to continue to protect the identity of those who deliberately foisted on the public such a destructive fraud?Who started saying that Iraq was involved?
It doesn't even have to be the left-wing wet dream of all the neocons in a room telling their minions to push Iraq threats in the media, either.
It could just be lousy reporting, some source who wanted to look more important than they were - ABC taken in by a willingness to run with whatever they've got. Lots of possibilities, but none of them leave ABC smelling so good.
Given how all the networks have refused to report their being duped by the military analyst scandal (to this day), I'm not optimistic that ABC will come clean - but if the other networks can spotlight them, they may have no choice.
