All this has happend before

Think counterinsurgency, torture, denial and legal revolts are a new thing in American history?

Of course they are not. And no, I'm not talking about Vietnam.

I'm talking about the Philippines. Turn of the century. Remember "the Hiker?"

First we liberated them from the Spanish, and then we pulled the plug on their dream of independence. Then they rebelled, and then we tried to stop the rebellion.

And then things just went downhill.

The New Yorker has an article (h/t to DangerRoom) describing our troubled history in the Philippines.

There are obvious differences, but there are some obvious and disturbing parallels.
